The flugelhorn mouthpiece

The flugelhorn is an indispensable part of the tradition of brass music in rural areas and, along with others, forms the basis of the sound character of our folk music. This legato instrument is particularly harmonious with singing, but must not disturb it with a trumpet-like sound. It should subordinate itself to the human voice and help to bring it to the fore. The trumpet register should shine brightly and the flugelhorn should stand out from it through softness and tonal breadth.

Mostly, however, trumpet mouthpieces are used on the flugelhorn, which do not do justice to the instrument's scale length or its sound idea.

All models are offered exclusively in 2-piece form, as a cup/shank module (flugelhorn - underpart), which means that all rims of the trumpet module system can be used. The cup depth of the flugelhorn mouthpieces is too different to also offer them in 3-piece form (rim/cup/shank). The models F6 to F9 are also available as complete mouthpieces with standard rim G.

Perinet/rotary valve

One should basically distinguish the German flugelhorn with rotary valves from the flugelhorn with perinet system, from the point of view of the mouthpiece. In contrast to the perinet trumpets, the bore of the mouthpiece for this should be larger than one for rotary valve system. Perinet flugelhorns are mostly used for jazz or modern music and the intended sound is usually dark, smoky (groovy-earthy).

cup comparison

In the following cross-section you can compare the different cups with an F0 boiler.

The bore

Besides all individuality, my recommendation is to choose the bore for the flugelhorn for rotary valves at 3.800mm in the medium. A bore exceeding 4.000mm makes the sound large-volume and dark, suitable for use in playing songs and tunes. A bore below 3.600mm is not advisable in the sense of the instrument, the sound would become too glaring and sharp.

These recommendations apply when the cup of the mouthpiece is deeper than that of a very deep trumpet mouthpiece and the cup shape is more v-shaped.

The shank bore of a flugelhorn mouthpiece is larger than that of a trumpet mouthpiece due to its design. The mouthpipe width of German flugelhorns is 11.300mm, that of French, American or YAMAHA flugelhorns 10.300mm. Czech instruments, despite rotary valves, sometimes have a small leadpipe width of 10.300mm.

The bore is therefore chosen to match the size of the shaft, or individually designed according to the customer's wishes, in order to help realise a sound idea.
